2010 : Rolex Submariner Date Watch, Ref. 116610
The legendary Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner Date in stainless steel gains an extra “1″ in its reference number this year–becoming 116610–but the subtle changes from the previous model extend significantly beyond numerology. As it did first with the 18-karat gold models in 2008, and the steel & 18K counterparts a year later, Rolex has engineered a range of evolutionary improvements to this most archetypal of diving watches. The five-decade heritage and identity of the world-famous Submariner timepiece remains perfectly clear, while the luxury factor takes an admirable surge upward.
The case of the Rolex 116610 Submariner Date watch stays 40mm in diameter, but the profile is squarer (dubbed “Supercase” by many Rolex enthusiasts) with noticeably thicker lugs–virtually identical to that of the closely related Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II. Most immediately apparent is the change to the Submariner watch’s famous graduated unidirectional bezel; while the knurled edge retains its famous gleam–and serrated functionality–gone is the anodized black aluminum insert. In its place is the alluringly glossy and materially exclusive Cerachrom bezel, which is manufactured from a special ceramic material that Rolex has developed in-house. Boasting virtual immunity to UV damage and saltwater corrosion, as well as being extremely resistant to scratches, the Cerachrom Submariner bezel features Rolex’s state of the art numeral-filling procedure which involves the use of platinum. Dials present the famous “Maxi” style of enlarged luminous hands and hour markers that are familiar from the previous generation 16710 LV, but the luminous material is not the industry standard Superluminova; here, Rolex has employed Chromalight. First used by Rolex in 2008′s ultra-water resistant Sea-Dweller Deepsea watch, the Chromalight material shows off a distinctive blue glow which is supposed to be considerably more visible to the human eye in dim underwater conditions. What Rolex has wisely not tampered with is the construction of the Submariner watch’s famously impenetrable Oyster case: machined from a solid block of metal as it always has, it incorporates an extremely strong caseback and triple-sealing Rolex Triplock crown which screw down to keep water out to a depth of 300 meters.
Changes are significant in terms of the Submariner’s famous Oyster bracelet. Manufactured from 904L stainless steel like the case itself, the brushed center links are now solid, a construction decision which may not enhance functionality, but certainly improves the tactile perception of luxury for the buyer. The same can be said even more for the clasp, which has evolved far beyond a simplistic system of folding blades and stamped metal diving extension pieces. Not only does this clasp latch crisply with its complex spring-loaded mechanism, it also boasts a clever and remarkably precise Glidelock extension device with a ratchet. No doubt many users will delight in simply playing with this precise dive extension mechanism, whether they use it for slipping over a wetsuit or not.
When the Rolex Submariner Date 116610′s screw-down caseback is removed, the famously robust manufacture Caliber 3135 comes into view. Of course, this self-winding Rolex movement with centrally mounted rotor and adjustable balance bridge is the same one that has powered the Submariner for more than two decades now, but it too offers certain technical upgrades over predecessors. In this regard, the hairspring with its Breguet terminal curve is in Rolex’s exclusive shock and magnetism-resistant Parachrom material, instead of glucydur. As the famous text on the dial of the Submariner informs the viewer, the movement has undergone and passed all the various tests of the Controle Officiel Suisse des Chronometres (COSC), and can be expected to perform with precision between -4 and +6 seconds on a day-to-day basis. Power reserve of the barrel is 50 hours.
Classicists who bemoan fancy upgrades to the Rolex Submariner and lament the passage of the “age of Rolex tool watches” will be happy to note that Rolex is still offering the non-date Submariner watch, Ref. 14060M in unchanged format for 2010. Still equipped with the aluminum bezel insert and the archaic-yet-iconic hollow bracelet, this model remains an excellent value, moreover being one of the last vestiges of the older era of Rolex. Many Rolex buyers however, will happily gravitate to the new 116610 Submariner Date, even at the not-inconsiderable asking price of $7,250. Additional temptation will be provided by the 116610 LV version, which is also in stainless steel but features a green Cerachrom rotating bezel, and a matching metallic dial in a particularly alluring shade of green gold ($7,750).
